Debut of the Sleep Scale for PGA Tour tournaments
Well well well... haven't seen you in a few days! Welcome back, good to have you.
This week we will introduce the Sleep Scale. The Sleep Scale is born from the many people who deem golf boring. I do not. But that is not to say that the last 2 tournaments before the FedExCup Playoffs start are not boring. I'm on record as saying they are nap worthy. With that, the Sleep Scale is born.
It's Wyndham week and as I'm writing this the tournament has already begun. It will be raining all day Thursday and probably most of Friday (good for sleep). At 11:04 Eastern Standard, it has been raining for 4 hours already in Greensboro and the greens at Sedgefield Country Club show no signs of slowing down. Pretty nuts.
The Bermuda rough at Sedgefield means that hitting fairways off the tee is imperative. I am thinking that whoever is on the leaderboard after day 1 should be around all weekend. At Sedgefield with the rain, you have to show up with some swagger to have a good tournament. If you have doubts in your game, Sedgefield will expose you.
Honestly, low scores and players just going for broke is the only saving grace for this weekend. I'm looking for players who are above the cutoff of 70th in the FedExCup standings to play like hell to get into the field for next week. Adam Scott who has been in the FedExCup Playoffs for the last 16 years needs to win to get in. On the other hand the players just inside the cutoff need to play really well to ensure their positions. It should be interesting... on the Sleep Scale, I'd rate this week's Wyndham to be a cat nap, 10 minutes or less.
Akshay Bhatia is opening his tournament paired with new Ryder Cup assistant Stewart Cink. If he shows out and does well enough T5 or above he gets into the FedExCup playoffs. I do not want to hypothesize that that will get him to Rome for the Ryder Cup, but I will say, this dude is MOTIVATED. He was slighted by the opportunity to play in the FedExCup because of his playing status, and if he makes it to next weekend... I might put some coins on this guy.
This is seeming to be the last we'll see Justin Thomas until 2024. He is not looking too crisp, and that is to be expected based on his play in recent history. He could absolutely go off, he has the ability to do that, but he has little time to lag behind if he wants to play next week.
Other players who historically are in the Playoffs who are outside the cut are Gary Woodland, he probably won't make it. Billy Horschel has to do pretty well to make it, and Shane Lowry, similarly to Horschel, needs a solid showing, and the Playoffs are in his sights.
Now news...
Tiger is on the PGA Tour Policy Board... My question is what took so long? Let the sky fall on the PGA Tour with all the news this summer, and then bring El Tigre in? Come on man! Either way, I hope that truly the PGA is able to become the player-first organization they claim to be. That clearly has not been the case with Jay Monahan in the recent past.
Camilo Villegas is making his broadcasting debut at the Wyndham. You might remember Camillio for his green reading technique.
Camilo has been battling injuries for many years... I won't posit that this technique was part of that but.....
Housekeeping:
What makes up the Sleep Scale?
It's above all a feeling, a vibe but also includes
Venue
Field
Weather
Wire to wire winner? (relevant to the recap)
the tournament within the season
Major?
Ryder cup?
Presidents cup?
Beers?
Somehow this all comes together in a willy-wonka sort of way, and out comes everything from snooze to catnap, onto drool and REM sleep.
Thanks for reading... talk to you soon....... Swing Easy
